Celebration of life and memorial catering
Armenian and Middle Eastern, from our family kitchen in Abbotsford
Salma's Kitchen caters celebrations of life and memorial receptions across the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver, cooked in our Abbotsford kitchen and delivered laid out ready to serve. These are usually arranged in days rather than weeks, and we plan for that. Call us with the date, the room and a rough number.

How quickly can this be arranged?
Usually within days. Nobody plans a memorial reception months ahead, and we do not treat short notice as an inconvenience. If the date is free we will tell you so on the call.
What narrows on a short timeline is the range of the spread, not the care that goes into it. Grilled mains, rice, salads, bread and dips can be put together quickly and well. If you are trying to work out what to do first, the note we wrote on catering a celebration of life in the Fraser Valley walks through it gently, and there is a companion piece for Abbotsford and Mission.
How do you estimate numbers when nobody has replied?
Count the people you are certain about, then add the wider circle who will come without telling anyone first. A memorial almost always draws more people than the family expects.
We plan on the generous side for that reason. A table that runs short partway through an afternoon is a harder thing to fix than food that goes home with people afterwards, and a Middle Eastern spread keeps well. You do not need a final number to call us. An estimate is enough to start, and it can move.
The room
Where is the reception being held?
That answer shapes everything else, because a home, a hall and a reception room each ask something different. The last column is a list of questions for whoever runs the room, not a statement about what any particular venue allows.
| Where the reception is | How the food arrives | Worth confirming with the room |
|---|---|---|
| A family home | Trays and platters set out on a kitchen counter or dining table, ready to serve. | Fridge space before people arrive, and who is refreshing the table so the family does not have to. |
| A community or church hall | Large-format trays laid out on a serving table for volunteers to run. | Kitchen access, tables for a buffet, setup time, and the hard end time for clearing out. |
| A funeral home reception room | A set table people come to after the service, usually cold and room-temperature dishes. | Whether outside catering is arranged through the home, and where deliveries go. |
| Outdoors, or a garden gathering | Mezze, salads, dips and bread, which sit well without a warming setup. | Shade for the table, and how long the food is expected to stay out. |
Halls vary a great deal, and some have their own arrangements for catering, so a short call to whoever manages the room settles more than a website can. Our note on catering a Fraser Valley community hall lists the questions worth asking.
How does the food arrive?
Laid out ready to serve, so nobody in the family spends the afternoon in a kitchen. We are a drop off kitchen: we cook the food for your date, deliver it, and leave the room to your people.
Pickup from our Abbotsford kitchen is always an option if someone would rather collect it on the way to the hall. Where there is no kitchen at the venue, tell us that on the phone and we will build the order around dishes that sit well rather than dishes that need holding. If the terms are unfamiliar, our note on drop off against full service explains what each one means in plain words.
The spread comes from our menu: grilled kabab and shish tawook, kibbe, rice, tabouli and Armenian salad, warm bread, and dips by the half kilo. We deliver across our whole service area, most often to Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack for gatherings like these.
What about guests with dietary needs?
Much of the table is already vegetarian and several dishes are vegan, so those guests eat from the main spread rather than being handed something separate. At a memorial that matters, because nobody wants to be singled out.
On halal we say the same thing we say to everyone: we are a small family kitchen, not a certified halal facility. We will tell you exactly what is in each dish so the people who need to decide can decide with real information. Allergy questions get the same plain answer, dish by dish.
What to have ready when you call
- The date, and the time people will arrive from the service.
- Where the reception is, and whether that room has a kitchen.
- A rough number. An estimate is enough, and we plan for it moving.
- Whether you want the food delivered or collected from our kitchen.
- Any dietary needs in the family or the wider circle.
Before you call
Memorial catering questions, answered
How quickly can you cater a celebration of life?
Usually within days. Memorial receptions are arranged on short notice by necessity, and we plan our week around that rather than treating it as an exception. Call us with the date and a rough number and we will tell you plainly what we can have ready.
How do you estimate numbers when nobody has replied?
Start with the people you are certain about, then add the wider circle who will come without saying so. A memorial almost always draws more than a family expects. We would rather plan on the generous side than have a table run short, and we will talk the number through with you on the phone.
What food suits a memorial reception?
Food people can eat standing, in their own time, without a plate that needs cutting. Mezze, salads, dips, warm bread and a grilled main or two do that well, because a shared table lets people gather and talk rather than sit and be served. Our journal has a fuller note on what to serve.
Do you deliver, or do we collect the food?
Either. We deliver across the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver, laid out ready to serve so nobody in the family is working in a kitchen. Pickup from our Abbotsford kitchen is always an option if someone would rather collect it on the way.
Can you cover vegetarian, vegan and halal needs?
Much of a Middle Eastern spread is already vegetarian and several dishes are vegan, so those guests eat from the same table as everyone else. On halal we are straight with you: we are a small family kitchen, not a certified halal facility. We will tell you exactly what is in each dish so you can decide.
Who do we call, and what should we have ready?
Call us on (819) 743-5953. Have the date, the room, a rough number and any dietary needs to hand. Nothing needs to be final. One short conversation is enough for us to start, and we will follow your lead on how much detail you want to go through.
